Anyone ever heard of/ seen the "Blue Dragons of Death" Apaches from the South Carolina National Guard? They were a Squadron of Apaches back in 03-04 painted gray as an experiment w/ new paint schemes for Army helos. Got great reviews, but the Army decided not to do it. Here's a tease .... Just curious if anyone has any other information and/ or pictures other than whats on "google". Looks like this one might be gettin' written down in the "good idea" book .... J/K ... its already there!

grandadjohn wrote:The paint job was done by the USMC for the SC Guard unit without approval from DoA. In my opinion, a lot better scheme than currently being used(helo drab). They deployed in that color. Some Apache's have been reassigned to other unit as the SC unit gets new birds and they will be repainted as time and money allows. There have been discussions on FSM's and ARC's forums about this several years ago I was wondering why they looked like USMC birds.

The guy to ask about those apaches is "Cobrahistorian" on ARC-Forums, as he flew on that birds. BTW he's also the author of Squadron-Signal's "Apache Walkaround". FYI the "Nightstalkers" also painted some MH-47E and MH-60K with the grey USMC-scheme; here's a picture.

I went over to the ARC thread ... GREAT information. I think in 5-10yrs when I'm ready to tackle the 1/32 Apache, I'll do it as one of these birds. Thanks for all the information, Klaus!

You're welcome, Scott, but it was actually Chris who pointed you to ARC in the first place. Guess it truly is as they say: Great minds think alike! I too have Revell's 1/32 Apache in my stash and I too was thinking of building it into a SCNG bird ... some time in the far future! GDJ, I knew Cobrahistorian was working on Apache decals but what I didn't know he was making them in 1/32!

I think it would have looked better w/o the figures, but that's just me. Fine job all the way around ... Also, if you follow the link that Chris posted and read the whole thread you get some really good information for the build.

True. .... I think I like it simply b/c it's something different. Something eye-catching. Like, "Hey ... there's a ... grey Apache!?!" Maybe it's just me ....

Glad you found those pictures Scott- from a figure oriented view I agree, those kit figures don't really add much to the build and don't stand up to the paint job and detail of the helo, not sure if it would have been better without them- I think it's a pretty clean build though. Flipped through the thread and ...not sure if I'll do one of these color jobs but I'll definitly use his thread as a jumping off point. I'll most likely add the teeth over the green like those pictures you posted from the University. I think his weathering's there, it's just not over the top, which I think for an A/C works much better than it does on say a tank!
